Major Medical Policy Coverage.

The Major Medical policy is a Comprehensive contract that is designed to provide coverage for most expenses related to illness and injury. Major Medical policies are usually written with a deductible and coinsurance. The policy also has a lifetime maximum on benefits. This lifetime maximum usually ranges from $1,000,000.00 to $5,000,000.00. Some of the principal coverages provided by a major medical policy are as follows:

Inpatient Hospital Room and Board Operating Room Expenses
Inpatient diagnostic tests Surgical procedures
Professional expenses related to Surgery Inpatient prescription drugs.
Outpatient Doctor visits Outpatient surgical procedures.
Outpatient diagnostic tests. Outpatient treatments.
Outpatient Prescription Drugs Limited Mental & Nervous expense
Limited in home care Rehabilitation costs

Of course, this does not include all expenses covered by a typical Major Medical policy. The Major Medical policy was designed to cover all expenses so any "surprises" were eliminated in the event of a serious injury or illness.

Although most individual health insurance plans are "Major Medical", They are not standardized contracts. Some policies have provisions that can result in costs payable by you that far exceed the deductible and coinsurance. See Contract Provisions for some of the ways insurance companies limit your coverage in the event of a large loss.
